Background of the Study

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is essential for nurses to enhance their knowledge, skills, and competencies in delivering quality patient care. CPD includes formal education, workshops, training programs, and self-directed learning, all of which contribute to professional growth and improved healthcare delivery (Olawale & Hassan, 2024). In a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, CPD helps nurses stay updated with the latest clinical practices, technological advancements, and evidence-based interventions (Usman et al., 2023).

In Bauchi State, like many other parts of Nigeria, nurses face challenges in accessing CPD opportunities due to inadequate funding, lack of institutional support, and a high workload that limits time for further education. These barriers impact the ability of nurses to improve their clinical skills, potentially affecting patient outcomes and overall healthcare efficiency (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2024).

This study aims to assess the effect of CPD on nurses' performance in Bauchi State. By understanding the relationship between continuous learning and job performance, the study will provide recommendations for enhancing CPD programs to improve nursing care.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized benefits of CPD in improving healthcare delivery, many nurses in Bauchi State have limited access to professional development opportunities. The absence of structured training programs and institutional encouragement has led to skill gaps, reduced efficiency, and lower job satisfaction among nurses (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024).

There is limited empirical research assessing the direct impact of CPD on nurses’ performance in Bauchi State. This study seeks to fill that gap by evaluating how participation in CPD programs influences nurses’ ability to provide effective patient care and enhance their professional competencies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the impact of Continuous Professional Development on nurses’ performance in Bauchi State.

2. To identify the challenges nurses face in accessing CPD programs.

3. To propose strategies for improving CPD programs for nurses in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

1. How does Continuous Professional Development affect nurses’ performance in Bauchi State?

2. What challenges do nurses face in accessing CPD opportunities?

3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance CPD participation among nurses?

Research Hypotheses

1. Participation in CPD programs significantly improves nurses’ performance.

2. Limited access to CPD negatively impacts nurses’ professional competence.

3. Implementing structured CPD programs will enhance nursing care quality in Bauchi State.
